Los Angeles, CA native, Marquita De Jesus, studied dance at Sam Houston State University where she earned her first scholarship for choreography as a sophomore. As a senior at SHSU, she started her first dance company, produced two shows, and performed in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Marquita moved to North Texas in 2005, completed her Masters in Fine Arts, and began traveling with her choreography to festivals, trips and workshops all over the world.

She began teaching at Dallas County Community College District campuses in 2006, and in 2010, she made a huge shift when she began to use dance as a tool for therapy in Cambodia and Zambia. This led to the creation of her non-profit, Silence the Violence, as well as the publishing of her book Radically Ordinary.

In 2013, Marquita completed a choreography fellowship with Joseph Walsh, principal dancer and choreographer with Houston Ballet. Marquita currently serves as the Founder and Company Director of Fusion Performance Company at The Dance Movement. Fusion is dance and leadership training program composed of 38 dancers who train across disciplines, perform and compete annually, and raise awareness and funds for organizations locally and internationally.

Marquita is married to Daniel, Elementary Pastor at Bent Tree Bible Fellowship and Lead Fusion Hip Hop Instructor. They have two daughters, Elle (4), and Emmy (6) who is a Mini Mover at The Dance Movement. This is Marquita’s 8th year on staff.
